Cheryl Olsen, coordinator of the Michigan Medicare Assistance Program for Senior Resources, was named Regional Coordinator of the Year 2023 by the state MMAP office.
According to the state MMAP office, factors considered are overall performance, team coherency, outreach, team member recruitment and retention, development and maintenance of partnerships, and development of best practices.
Olsen (left in photo) moved into the MMAP coordinator role shortly before the pandemic. She then lost seven volunteers with more than 65 combined years of counseling experience.
“Cheryl has handled all the challenges with grace and a calm toughness,” according to the presentation. “She has recruited new volunteers and brought them on board to work alongside her experienced counselors. She has identified processes and practices that help her small team work effectively and efficiently.
“Performance numbers have gone up, as they have in other regions. But it’s the people behind those numbers, people like Cheryl and her team, that give them real meaning.”
“This is a huge honor and underscores what we already know about her work – it is stellar,” said Amy Florea, community services director and Olsen’s supervisor.
